AP CALCULUS AB

AP Calculus AB is a rigorous, full-year course designed for students who are ready to challenge themselves with college-level mathematics while still in high school. Mirroring a first-semester university calculus class, this course explores the foundational concepts of limits, derivatives, integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Students learn to analyze problems from multiple perspectives—graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal—while building confidence in their reasoning and communication skills.

Through real-world applications, students use calculus to model change and motion in diverse contexts—from science and engineering to economics and the natural world. Technology plays a key role as students use graphing calculators and digital tools to visualize and verify their work, deepening both understanding and accuracy.

This course will be timetabled as linear, running across the full school year. As a result, students must complete Pre-Calculus 12 by the end of June in their Grade 11 year to be eligible to register in AP Calculus AB.

More than just math, this course is a gateway to higher-level thinking. It sharpens problem-solving abilities, develops university-level study habits, and can earn students post-secondary credit with a strong performance on the AP exam. AP Calculus AB is the ideal choice for students passionate about STEM or anyone looking to build advanced analytical skills and get a head start on their academic journey.

Students may choose to write the College Board AP exam in May (approx. $130 CAD); strong scores of a 4 or 5 can earn first-year university credit.
